چکیده

It is generally understood that, in the REST architectural style, “hypermedia is the engine of application state”[8]. But what does that really mean? What is hypermedia? Can it be identified within a resource representation? How can hypermedia be the “engine of application state?” In this chapter, a number of different notions of ”hypermedia” along with a formal definition of “Hypermedia Type” will be presented. In addition, nine Hypermedia Factors (H-Factors) that can be found in resource representations are identified and examples of these factors are provided. Armed with these nine H-Factors, several registered media types are analyzed to determine the presence of these hypermedia elements and to quantify the hypermedia support native to these media types. Finally, a prototypical media type (PHACTOR) is defined and reviewed in order to show how H-Factors can be incorporated into a media type in order to produce a data format that can act as an engine of application state.

Authoring of Adaptive Hypermedia; Adaptive Hypermedia and Learning Environments

This chapter focuses on the aspect of Authoring in Adaptive Hypermedia, from some of its different perspectives, including authoring for learning environments. It starts by showing the necessity of research in this area, then describes a new framework model for authoring of Adaptive Hypermedia, LAOS. Within LAOS, the adaptation model, which is the main aspect of adaptive hypermedia, is detailed...

A survey on web usage mining techniques for web-based adaptive hypermedia systems

This chapter discusses web usage mining techniques that can be applied for building adaptive hypermedia systems. These techniques are used for uncovering hidden patterns within web access data and then for building the user model that lies in the heart of each adaptive system. Web access data, traditionally stored in the server log files, constitute a rich source of data collected in a non-intr...

A Practical Approach to Authoring Hypermedia Composites Used for Web Applications

This paper gives an introduction to modeling of hypermedia composites used for structuring of web-materials. In the introductory part we explain the need for a data structure such as hypermedia composite in order to provide better characterization and construction of hypermedia-materials. In the second chapter we bring a description of hypermedia composite model. Third chapter tells how to crea...

A User-Centered Approach to the Retrieval of Information in an Adaptive Web Site

This chapter describes the user-centered design approach we adopted in the development and evaluation of an adaptive Web site. The development of usable Web sites, offering easy and efficient services to heterogeneous users, is a hot topic and a challenging issue for adaptive hypermedia and human-computer interaction. User-centered design promises to facilitate this task by guiding system desig...

Adaptive Hypermedia for Personalized TV

Adaptive hypermedia techniques have until now been mainly applied to web pages with text and images. In this chapter, we explore how these techniques can be extended to time-based media, particularly in the domain of interactive television.
